Black People: There Were Others Besides Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Black People: There Were Others Besides Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. legacy will forever be remembered, but we must also know that Dr. King wasn't the only civil rights advocate during those times. But don't we know that already? I guess it's hard to acknowledge others who too made their presence known doing the civil rights movement, when the White Man and even some from our Black communities fail to mention that.
How many movies have we seen that only portrays Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and not others? Let's see-there's the recent movie, Selma and many others we can mention. Black film makers, screen writers, and anyone else-LISTEN UP! The people want to see the story, struggle, and leadership of other civil rights leaders like: Stokely Carmichael. Mr. Carmichael rose to prominence in the civil rights and Black Power movements, first as a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), later as the "Honorary Prime Minister" of the Black Panther Party, and finally as a leader of the All-African Peoples Revolutionary Party.
Ella Baker was also a part of the civil rights movement. Ms. Baker was an African-American civil rights and human rights activist. She was a largely behind-the-scenes organizer whose career spanned over five decades. She worked alongside some of the most famous civil rights leaders of the 20th century, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, and Martin Luther King, Jr. She also mentored many emerging activists such as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael, Rosa Parks, and Bob Moses. She was a critic of professionalized, charismatic leadership and a promoter of grassroots organizing and radical democracy. She has been called "One of the most important African American leaders of the twentieth century and perhaps the most influential woman in the civil rights movement.
We can continue with this subject, but you get our drift. God used many from the civil rights movement during those times-we, the audience; would just like to see others portrayed on the movie screen, that's all.
